Lake Thunderbird is a reservoir in Oklahoma, near Cleveland County.
Lake Thunderbird is a 6,070-acre reservoir in Cleveland County near Norman. It was completed in 1965 as a Bureau of Reclamation project, and water supply is still a big part of its job today.
ODWC says Thunderbird supplies water to Norman, Midwest City, and Del City. It was also built for flood control and recreation, so this is a working municipal reservoir as well as a fishing lake.
The current fish record is broad, with bass, crappie, catfish, sunfish, saugeye, white bass, buffalo, carp, and several other species. If it were my first trip, I would pick one group of fish and build the day around that instead of trying to sample everything.
Thunderbird is big enough that I would choose one section and stay with it for a while. I would start around the obvious cover and structure I can see, then make a bigger move only after I have learned something from that first area.
The project was created for municipal water supply, flood control, and recreation.
Norman, Midwest City, and Del City are the three cities named in ODWC's lake survey.
ODWC's survey gives the reservoir a maximum depth of about 58 feet.
The reservoir was completed in 1965.
