Range and Identity
Pomoxis annularis is retained as the scientific identity. It is distinct from Black Crappie, even where the two occur together. A general crappie label should not combine their measurements or observations without a supported identification of the fish involved.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults use soft-bottom pools, backwaters and lake habitat, including turbid water. The occupied position can differ from the main current in the same river. A waterbody name is therefore useful alongside the actual cover, clarity and sheltered area where the fish was observed.
Food and Life History
The upper references are fifty-three centimeters total length and 2.4 kilograms. Young take small invertebrates and adults chiefly fishes. Missouri accounts describe nesting colonies in sheltered coves, near vegetation when available. Regional spring dates are not imposed across the entire species range.
Field Note
Small minnows fished slowly near submerged wood or other cover are a reported approach. Retain a clear identification with a catch so White and Black Crappie measurements are not combined.
