Range and Identity
The retained scientific string is Sander canadensis × Sander vitreus. It identifies the parent species without assigning the sex of either parent in every individual cross. Natural interbreeding has been documented where Sauger and Walleye ranges overlap.
Habitat and Behavior
Because the hybrid shares parental characteristics, features used to separate Sauger from Walleye may appear in combination. Fin markings, cheek scales and tail markings should be considered together. A single intermediate-looking feature is not sufficient to establish every fish as a Saugeye.
Food and Life History
Neither parent’s maximum length or weight is assigned to the hybrid. A securely verified hybrid-specific upper measurement was not established in the checked material. The same distinction applies to habitat and spawning descriptions: a parent’s account is not automatically a complete hybrid life history.
Field Note
Keep any stocking identification or verified catch documentation with a Saugeye record. That evidence is more useful than labeling every uncertain Sauger-Walleye-looking fish as a hybrid.
