Identification
A long snout and thick lips accompany the muted body pattern. This profile follows Allohistium cinereum, formerly placed in Etheostoma. Redlips Darter was separated from the older Ashy Darter concept, so older records need care.
Size and Weight
The Georgia species account gives a maximum standard length of 10 cm, approximately 3.9 inches. Standard length excludes the tail fin. No verified maximum weight was established. Average adult lengths from regional accounts are not substituted for that maximum.
Habitat and Natural Food
Clear pools with slow current and relatively silt-free sand or gravel provide habitat. Fish often occur near cover, including boulders and vegetation. Midge larvae, mayfly larvae and aquatic worms are documented foods.
Conservation and Observation
Sediment accumulation can change the pool-bottom conditions the fish uses. Natural-history descriptions support protecting those habitats; they do not establish a best bait or a conventional sport fishery. Identification should account for changes in the species group.

Ashy Darter and its close relative Redlips Darter are placed in Allohistium. Their combination of characteristics led researchers to revisit their relationships with other darters. The current name helps keep modern observations separate from older, broader species accounts.
