The Largemouth Bass

Largemouth Bass is a familiar freshwater predator associated with cover in lakes and slower river habitats. This page preserves the traditional broad common-name usage while making its scientific-name history explicit.

Scientific-Name Context

The inventory retains Micropterus salmoides. Recent classifications apply that name to Florida Bass and use Micropterus nigricans for the northern Largemouth Bass lineage. Older broad accounts use salmoides differently, so their range-wide measurements should not be silently reassigned to one newly delimited species.

Cover and Feeding

Traditional largemouth accounts describe predators using vegetation, wood, banks and other cover. Fish and crustaceans feature in the diet, with prey choice changing as fish grow. The location of cover and available food helps explain where an individual bass holds within a lake or river.

Reproduction and Size

Males prepare and guard nests and attend young during early development. The retained compiled size references belong to the traditional broad account. A modern catch record requires locality and lineage evidence before it can establish an upper size for either currently separated species.

Born to Ambush

Largemouth bass hide among submerged roots, timber and vegetation, then strike when prey comes within reach. Their appetite includes other bass: even their own species can end up on the menu.
