Range and Identity
Micropterus dolomieu is native to parts of the Great Lakes, Hudson Bay and Mississippi regions and has been introduced widely. Texas populations include stocked fish. Native and introduced occurrence should remain separate rather than using a familiar local fishery to redefine the original range.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults use rocky lake areas and gravelly stream pools or runs, often near current breaks. Young begin with small plankton and insect larvae before taking more fishes and crayfish. Clear water and relatively clean rock or gravel are recurring habitat features.
Food and Life History
The upper references are sixty-nine centimeters total length and 5.4 kilograms. Males build shallow nests and guard eggs and young. Crayfish, minnows and hellgrammites are documented natural baits, while jigs and other bass lures can imitate available prey.
Field Note
Concentrate on cover beside current rather than assuming the strongest flow is always best. A boulder’s downstream pocket can offer shelter near feeding opportunities and seasonal nesting habitat.
