Lake Champlain

Lake Champlain asks you to choose a piece of water, not conquer the whole lake. A sheltered bay, an island shoreline and the open lake can offer completely different fishing on the same morning. On the New York side, that variety is the attraction—and the reason to decide what you want to catch before picking a launch.

The islands add more than scenery. Valcour Island was the setting of a naval battle in 1776, and today its surrounding shores and shoals are part of a well-established bass fishery. You can fish within a landscape with a remarkable history without turning the outing into a long run across exposed water.

Build a bass route around the islands

For smallmouth, start by looking for rocky shoreline that extends into a point or shoal. A tube jig gives you a way to feel the bottom, while a small paddletail lets you search above it. Cast across a change in depth before moving closer; running the boat directly over a promising patch makes the first presentation less subtle.

Largemouth invite a different route through bays and vegetated edges. Carry a weedless soft plastic for places where an open jig keeps collecting plants. When a fish bites, note whether it came from an opening, an outside edge or isolated cover. Repeating that feature elsewhere is more useful than simply continuing around the entire island.

A trout day needs a different setup

Lake trout and landlocked Atlantic salmon belong to Champlain’s open-water fishery. Their recovery has benefited from sea-lamprey control, an important part of why this lake can offer both tournament bass fishing and a substantial coldwater pursuit.

A trolling spoon is a sensible starting lure, but its depth matters as much as its color. Use temperature and fish-finder information to place it where fish and bait are holding. The surface may look inviting while the useful coldwater layer lies well below it. If you lack the equipment to find and maintain that depth, a guided trip can make a first trout outing more productive than guessing over open water.

Match the launch to the day’s weather

Peru Dock serves the Valcour area; Port Douglas, Willsboro Bay and Westport provide other New York launching choices. Pick one close to your intended fishing rather than spending the morning traveling between distant sections. Seasonal dock removal can also change how easy a late-autumn launch feels.

North and south winds can build substantial waves along Champlain’s length. An island that sheltered you on the way out may leave an exposed crossing on the return. Small-craft anglers should favor manageable shore routes and reconsider the trip when the forecast calls for stronger wind.

New York and Vermont have a reciprocal fishing-license agreement for much of the lake, but it has boundaries and exclusions. Check your intended route and the border-water fishing rules before crossing. A convenient boat run is not proof that the same license covers every bay or connected water.
