Cold-Water Habitat
Cisco occurs in lakes and some large rivers across northern North America. Coastal records also occur around Hudson Bay. Its association with open, cold water makes the lake’s deeper habitat relevant even when fish are not visible from shore.
Feeding Role
Plankton and larger crustaceans form important foods. This feeding pattern connects small aquatic animals with larger fish that use cisco as prey. It also explains why a lake observation should include depth and schooling location rather than assuming a bottom-feeding lifestyle.
Size and Names
The common reference length is roughly half the published maximum. A maximum therefore describes an exceptional size, not a promise for an ordinary catch. Cisco and lake herring can refer to the same fish, while related Coregonus species require closer identification than a shared silvery appearance provides.
A Freshwater Herring Name
Lake herring is a common name, not a statement that Cisco is a marine herring. Retaining Coregonus artedi helps keep fisheries and species records aligned.
