Range and Identity
Ichthyomyzon gagei occurs in portions of the Mississippi and Tennessee regions and Gulf-draining systems from Florida toward Texas. The drainage context should remain explicit when distinguishing it from other lampreys. A lamprey-shaped fish is not automatically a parasitic species.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults inhabit gravel and sand riffles and runs in creeks and small rivers. Larvae occur near sand bars and debris in flowing water. These life-stage descriptions are related but not identical, so the sampled stage is an important part of the habitat record.
Food and Life History
The upper length reference is seventeen centimeters total length, with twelve centimeters as a common size. Reported egg production varies substantially among localities. That variation should not be reduced to a single fixed count expected from every female.

Record whether an observation is a larva or transformed adult. This distinction helps interpret both habitat and identification, especially where several lamprey species occur within the same broader river basin.
