Official stocking history

Stocking records show that the following fish or strains were stocked here. A historical stocking does not by itself prove that a self-sustaining population remains today.

Chickamauga Reservoir is a 36,240-acre TVA reservoir on the Tennessee River between Watts Bar and Nickajack. It has become one of the best-known largemouth-bass lakes in the Southeast while also supporting crappie, catfish, smallmouth bass, sauger and white bass.

What Makes Chickamauga Different

TVA keeps the reservoir within a relatively narrow navigation pool, but current and aquatic vegetation can still change fish position quickly. Grass, creek channels, river ledges, shell and hard-bottom areas give bass both shallow and offshore patterns.

Largemouth Bass

Spinnerbaits, vibrating jigs, frogs, lipless crankbaits and soft plastics work around grass. When fish move offshore, deep crankbaits, football jigs and Carolina rigs fit the river ledges and hard-bottom structure.

Crappie and Catfish

Crappie respond to minnows and small jigs around brush and creek channels. Blue, channel and flathead catfish can be targeted with fresh cut bait or live bait along river-channel structure.

A Practical Chickamauga Game Plan

Choose one creek and its nearby Tennessee River section. Fish grass and shallow cover early, then use electronics on the creek mouth and river ledges if the shallow bite slows.
