Official stocking history

Stocking records show that the following fish or strains were stocked here. A historical stocking does not by itself prove that a self-sustaining population remains today.

Saguaro Lake is a reservoir in Maricopa County, Arizona and covers about 1,264 acres, reaches about 118 feet at its deepest point and holds roughly 70,070 acre-feet.

Several patterns can work at once on Saguaro Lake, especially when wind separates clear water from dirty water. Deep water at Saguaro Lake gives fish room to move away from shore as summer heat and bright light build.

What Makes Saguaro Lake Different

Saguaro Lake is the lowest large reservoir in the Salt River chain. It combines steep canyon walls with broader lower-lake coves, points, and extensive installed habitat, giving largemouth, yellow bass, catfish, and stocked smallmouth several distinct patterns.

Fish installed habitat and protected cover for largemouth, rock for smallmouth, and shad schools for yellow bass. Flathead catfish use heavy cover and channel turns. Rainbow trout and walleye are stocking-history targets, so do not treat them as guaranteed.

How Saguaro Lake Fishes

Saguaro covers about 1,264 acres and reaches roughly 118 feet. The canyon end and broader lower water should be checked separately because shade, wind, and cover differ sharply.

Arizona Game and Fish highlights the lake’s roughly 2,200 habitat structures. They can hold largemouth, crappie, and sunfish at depths that change through the year. Count a jig down and repeat the productive level.

Yellow bass follow threadfin shad and can appear suddenly away from shore. Keep a small spoon ready, then let it sink after the surface action ends. Flathead catfish need an entirely different live-bait pass near deep cover.

The stocked list is broad, but stocking history is not proof that every species is common today. Build the first trip around confirmed bass, shad, carp, and flatheads, then treat stocked targets as a separate possibility.

Saguaro’s steep walls make shade useful long after direct sun reaches the open lake. Fish a shaded rock edge slowly, then compare it with one installed habitat site at the same depth. That is a cleaner test than jumping between yellow bass, largemouth, and trout tackle on every stop.
