What to Expect at Opossum Lake

At 59.03 acres, Opossum Lake is small enough to fish methodically but large enough for one shoreline to differ from another.

Fish and Useful Baits at Opossum Lake

Fish reported from Opossum Lake include black crappie, bluegill, common carp, largemouth bass, muskellunge, smallmouth bass, walleye, and yellow perch. Channel catfish and rainbow trout are also stocked in Opossum Lake.

Bass

When largemouth bass hold tight to cover on Opossum Lake, a compact jig or weedless worm is more useful than repeated open-water casts. Smallmouth at Opossum Lake are better matched with tubes, grubs and crayfish-colored crankbaits on rock or clean points.

Crappie, Perch and Sunfish

Crappie anglers on Opossum Lake should count the jig down beside brush until the holding depth becomes clear. A small float, light line and a piece of worm are enough for Opossum Lake bluegill around cover. Perch anglers on Opossum Lake should stay mobile until several bites come from the same depth.

Walleye and Larger Predators

Low-light walleye fishing on Opossum Lake calls for shallow crankbaits, while daylight favors jigs on deeper structure. For Opossum Lake muskellunge, work a large moving lure around points and weed edges with proper release tools ready.

A Simple Fishing Plan for Opossum Lake

Pick one kind of cover and fish it carefully, then compare it with a second cover type before moving far on Opossum Lake. Then check the original creek route, the dam end and any point on Opossum Lake that reaches toward deeper water.

When to Fish Opossum Lake

On Opossum Lake, spring fish often move onto protected banks before the open basin warms. Summer fishing on Opossum Lake is usually best at low light, beside shade or along the outside edge of healthy cover. During fall at Opossum Lake, revisit creek mouths and main points with baitfish-sized lures.
