Range and Identity
Balistes vetula occurs in Atlantic waters. Similar body shape or bright coloration in other triggerfishes does not establish the same identity. Locality and a complete view of the fish are useful when comparing records from different reef regions or checking a common-name report.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults use rocky and coral habitats as well as nearby sand and grassy bottoms. They may occur alone or in groups. A single solitary observation therefore does not establish a fixed social pattern, and adjacent reef and soft-bottom settings can both be relevant to the species.
Food and Life History
Bottom animals provide food. Observations include blowing water to turn over sea urchins and attacking the side with shorter spines. Upper references are sixty centimeters total length and 5.4 kilograms. These are separate values, not a formula linking every measured fish’s length and weight.
Field Note
If feeding is observed, record how the fish handles its prey. The position of an urchin and the fish’s actions can reveal more than a simple list of foods.
