Range and Identity
Canthidermis sufflamen occurs on both sides of the Atlantic, including western Atlantic coasts and islands and several central or eastern Atlantic island groups. A triggerfish seen offshore should still be identified from its own features. Open-water habitat is not unique to this species.
Habitat and Behavior
Fish occur alone or in small groups, commonly near seaward reef drop-offs and sometimes in shallower water. Association with floating Sargassum is recorded. Such a sighting does not establish that every individual depends on the same seaweed patch throughout its life.
Food and Life History
Large zooplankton is the principal recorded food, and distinct pairing occurs in reproduction. The compiled maximum references are sixty-five centimeters total length and 6.1 kilograms. They remain independent upper values, without implying that both measurements came from a single specimen or represent an ordinary reef encounter.
Field Note
Note whether the fish is beside a drop-off or associated with floating weed. Those settings describe different parts of its open-water reef habitat.
