Range and Identity
Canthidermis maculata occurs widely in warm and tropical marine waters, excluding the Mediterranean in the checked account. The worldwide outline should not be treated as identical abundance in all oceans. The scientific identity matters when comparing similarly shaped pelagic triggerfishes.
Habitat and Behavior
Fish occur in shallow coastal and offshore waters, often near drifting objects, and may also use deeper rocky slopes. Large catches indicate substantial schools. Floating material can provide habitat context even when an observation occurs far from a shoreline or reef.
Food and Life History
Zooplankton is recorded food. The maximum reference is fifty centimeters total length, with thirty-five centimeters given as a common size. The species lays eggs and forms pairs during reproduction. No independent maximum mass or universal breeding season is inferred from its broad range.

Keep the drifting-object association in an offshore record. It explains an important part of the setting that would be missed by labeling the sighting simply as open ocean.
