The Trigger
The large first dorsal spine can lock upright until movement of the second spine releases it. This helps the fish anchor in a crevice. Adults are mainly olive-gray with blue markings, while young can be yellowish and more strongly patterned.
Feeding
Specialized teeth and strong jaws crush or chisel hard-shelled prey. Crabs, mollusks, sea urchins and sand dollars are among recorded foods. Fish can direct water at sandy bottom to expose buried prey, linking reef shelter with nearby feeding areas.
Nest Care
Males establish territories and prepare sand nests. Females guard and aerate the eggs, while males defend nesting areas. Young subsequently spend time near the surface, including floating Sargassum, before becoming bottom-associated. The agency upper length is explicitly a fork-length measurement.
Preserve the Fork-Length Measure
The agency’s 28-inch reference ends at the tail fork. It should remain distinct from compiled total-length values and local legal measurement rules.
