Bottom Feeding
Barbels help locate food near the substrate, and the mouth draws prey from the bottom. Recorded foods include insects, mollusks and crayfish, with other animal material also taken. The fish’s large size does not mean it feeds only by chasing other large fish.
Slow Reproduction
Lake Sturgeon matures late compared with many familiar freshwater fishes. Adults move into river spawning habitat and do not necessarily reproduce every year. A population therefore depends on both survival of long-lived adults and access to habitat used during reproduction.
Size and Identity
The compiled maximum length is 274 centimeters total length, while federal accounts describe weights reaching roughly three hundred pounds. These are upper references, not typical catches. Lake Sturgeon is Acipenser fulvescens, distinct from other sturgeons whose marine migrations or records should not be copied into this freshwater account.
Look for Barbels and Scutes
