Range and Identity
Acipenser transmontanus is associated with Pacific systems including the Fraser, Columbia and Sacramento–San Joaquin. Some populations are landlocked. A single sea-going life cycle should not be imposed on every fish merely because coastal movements occur in part of the species.
Habitat and Behavior
Much of its life can be spent in freshwater, with estuarine or marine use varying among populations and individuals. Historical giant fish do not describe the size of a typical modern catch. The reported six-meter scale belongs to older upper-size accounts, not a newly certified record.
Food and Life History
Young feed on small bottom animals, and larger individuals also take fishes. Spawning occurs in freshwater, with maturity and intervals between breeding events varying geographically. Length and mass references are independent and need not describe the same specimen or date.
Field Note
Retain the measurement convention, original source and record date for exceptional fish. This keeps historical evidence useful without presenting it as the expected size of an individual in a present-day river.
