Stonecoal Reservoir covers about 550 acres in Lewis and Upshur counties and reaches roughly 85 feet. Largemouth bass, walleye, muskellunge, crappie and sunfish give anglers a strong multi-species fishery.
What Makes Stonecoal Different
WVDNR stocks both walleye and muskellunge, an unusual combination for a lake this size. The reservoir also carries a horsepower restriction that keeps it quieter than the state's larger Corps reservoirs.
Walleye and Muskellunge
Jigs, live bait and trolling crankbaits work around deep points for walleye. Muskies can be targeted with larger jerkbaits and swimbaits around points and creek mouths.
Bass and Crappie
Bass respond to crankbaits, jigs and soft plastics around shoreline cover and points. Crappie can be caught around brush with minnows and small jigs.
Two Stocked Predators in One Small Reservoir
Stonecoal's combination of stocked walleye and muskellunge is unusual for a 550-acre lake. I would use deeper points and channel edges for walleye, while muskie fishing would center more on larger structural features and bait movement. Those are different trips even when they happen on the same water.
A Practical Stonecoal Game Plan
Use the lake's depth rather than staying tied to the bank. I would start on points and then move deeper for walleye or suspended fish if the shallow bite fades.
