Rex Lake

Rex Lake is a place to make a smaller plan inside a larger lake system. You do not need to use a whole day crossing between basins to justify a trip. A bass or panfish session focused on one reachable stretch can be enough, provided you distinguish Rex from the surrounding water when choosing access and reading a map.

A basin with its own swimming landmark

The Ohio park map marks a boat-swim area on Rex Lake, separate from the visitor-center beach by Turkeyfoot. It is a distinctive recreation feature to recognize when planning a fishing position.

Give any active swimming area plenty of room. A fishing lure should never be used to claim space from swimmers, and an empty-looking area is not automatically open for casting. Read current signs before setting up close to a designated recreation zone.

Precision before distance

For bass, choose a target that gives the cast a purpose: an outside vegetation edge, a shadow line or another feature you can actually see. Place a weedless plastic near it and allow time for the lure to settle. A second cast from a slightly different angle may present the bait better than a harder cast to the same spot.

If there is no visible cover, use the lure to learn the water. Count down briefly before beginning a steady retrieve, then add a little sinking time on the next cast. Stop increasing the count when the lure repeatedly drags bottom or fouls. You are building a simple picture of the reachable depth, not measuring the whole lake.

Bluegill and pumpkinseed deserve a lighter touch

A small hook with a little worm is an accessible starting point for either sunfish. Keep the hook point exposed and watch for a sideways movement of the float. If the bait is being picked apart, shorten it before switching to a much larger hook that small fish cannot take easily.

Black crappie may favor a small artificial held at a consistent depth. Try a light twitch followed by a pause, and resist the urge to move it constantly. Record the depth setting after a bite so that the next cast can repeat the useful part of the presentation.

Largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmoides), Black Crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus), Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus), Pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus), Channel Catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio), Gizzard Shad (Dorosoma cepedianum), and Golden Shiner (Notemigonus crysoleucas).

Golden shiners and gizzard shad are part of the listed community. They can inspire a fish-shaped lure, but the list does not tell you the size of forage available during a particular visit. Match any small fish you observe rather than automatically choosing the biggest imitation in the box.

Before calling it a day

Is Rex Lake the same as Turkeyfoot Lake?

No. Rex is the separately named basin northwest of Turkeyfoot. Their proximity makes a map useful, particularly when directions describe a general Portage Lakes access point rather than Rex itself.

What is a sensible alternative if bass do not cooperate?

Switch deliberately to a panfish rig and test a few depths. Carrying that light setup gives you another objective without needing to move the entire outing to a different lake.

Should I keep changing lures after one missed fish?

First inspect the hook, line and bait placement. A poorly aligned plastic or damaged point can cause problems that a new color will not solve. Repeat a good-looking presentation before deciding that the fish rejected the lure itself.

Keep any notes specific to Rex. A result from a nearby basin can be interesting, but it is not automatically evidence about the water you fished today.
