Lake Gaston is a 20,300-acre Roanoke River reservoir shared by North Carolina and Virginia. NCWRC fisheries work lists a maximum depth around 95 feet. Largemouth bass, Alabama bass, striped bass, crappie, catfish and sunfish make it one of the state's strongest multi-species reservoirs.
What Makes Lake Gaston Different
Dominion Energy keeps Gaston close to a normal 200-foot elevation, so water levels are relatively stable compared with many flood-control lakes. Hydrilla and other vegetation have also influenced the fishery, giving bass anglers large areas of shallow and mid-depth cover.
Largemouth Bass
NCWRC has used Lake Gaston as one of its F1 largemouth-bass stocking waters since 2023. Spinnerbaits, vibrating jigs, topwaters and soft plastics work around vegetation and docks, while deeper points and channel structure become more important in summer.
Stripers, Crappie and Catfish
Stripers follow bait through open water and creek mouths. Live bait and swimbaits are dependable. Crappie respond to jigs and minnows around brush and docks On Lake Gaston, that is the specific pattern I would use first. Catfish can be targeted with cut bait and live bait along the Roanoke channel.
A Practical Lake Gaston Game Plan
Choose one creek and keep the main river channel nearby. Fish vegetation and docks early, then move toward points and channels if the bite fades. Stable water makes Gaston easier to pattern than reservoirs with major seasonal drawdowns.
