Fontana Lake is a 10,290-acre mountain reservoir on the Little Tennessee River in Swain and Graham counties. It is steep, deep and surrounded by largely forested mountain land. Smallmouth bass, Alabama bass, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie and catfish are important targets.
What Makes Fontana Different
TVA controls the reservoir as part of the Tennessee Valley system, so seasonal water-level changes can expose large stretches of shoreline. The deep, clear basin supports coolwater fish, and NCWRC stocks walleye annually.
Bass
Smallmouth and Alabama bass can be caught on rocky points, bluff banks and deep structure with jerkbaits, tubes, finesse worms and jigs. Clear water rewards longer casts and natural colors.
Walleye and Crappie
Walleye respond to jigs, live bait and trolling crankbaits around deep points and low-light feeding areas. Crappie can be caught with minnows and jigs around timber and brush.
A Practical Fontana Game Plan
Think vertically. Start around rocky points and creek mouths, then use electronics to check deeper water. Water level matters because shoreline cover can be dramatically different from one season to the next.
