Fish species in Lake Blaine

Official stocking history

Stocking records show that the following fish or strains were stocked here. A historical stocking does not by itself prove that a self-sustaining population remains today.

Lake Blaine is a lake in Flathead County, Montana.

The recorded size of Lake Blaine is missing; fish one short bank carefully before deciding whether a wider search makes sense.

Fish and Baits

Fish listed for Lake Blaine include Black Crappie, Brook Trout, Kokanee Salmon, Lake Trout, Largemouth Bass, Largescale Sucker, Longnose Sucker, Northern Pike, Northern Pikeminnow, Pumpkinseed, Rainbow Trout, Westslope Cutthroat Trout, and Yellow Perch.

Across the darker edge of the old channel, keep a small jig tipped with a worm or minnow close to bottom on a shelf for yellow perch.

Around the soft edge of a narrow arm, cover weeds, shallow points, and flat edges with a spoon or sturdy minnow lure for northern pike.

Around the clearer side of an inlet turn, fish a small jig or minnow around wood, weeds, and sharp little drops for black crappie.

Near the weed line of a steep shoreline, work a soft plastic, jig, or spinnerbait around weeds and protected cover for largemouth bass.

Along the soft edge of a main-lake point, other targets listed here include Rainbow Trout; give each one its own bait and depth instead of trying to catch everything with the same rig.

How to Read the Water

Beside the narrow end of a short point, make one shallow pass and one deeper pass on the same shoreline; that shows whether fish are tight to cover or using the first break.

Season by Season

Beside the clean side of the first drop, spring runoff can add color and pull fish toward fresh water; green weeds and the first drop become stronger summer targets; in fall, follow bait toward points and shallow flats, while winter rewards a slower search.

A Simple Tackle Plan

Beside the outer drop of a small island, a medium spinning rod with 8- to 10-pound line handles most jigs and small casting baits; add a stronger outfit and a proper leader when northern pike are the target.

Near the current seam of a windblown shore, record the wind, water color, depth of the first bite, and cover after a bite; those four notes are more useful on the next trip than a long list of spots that did not produce.
