Range and Identity
The retained scientific string identifies Salvelinus fontinalis and Salvelinus namaycush as the parents. Maine describes Splake as a hatchery hybrid stocked to provide fishing opportunities. This origin differs from treating it as a separately evolved native trout species.
Habitat and Behavior
In Maine evaluations, Splake survived and grew well in some waters where stocked Brook Trout performed poorly. They consumed fishes such as White Perch and Yellow Perch. These results describe studied waters, not a guarantee that the hybrid performs identically in every lake.
Food and Life History
Maine adults typically measure ten to eighteen inches, and fish exceeding ten pounds have been caught. Those values are a typical length range and a documented lower bound for large fish, not verified global maxima. Lake Trout’s upper size is not assigned to the hybrid.
Field Note
Use stocking information alongside tail shape and coloration when identifying a fish. A slight tail fork can help, but resemblance to Brook Trout makes a single superficial feature insufficient.
