Lake Habeeb at Rocky Gap State Park covers about 243 acres and reaches roughly 74 feet. Largemouth and smallmouth bass, yellow perch, bluegill, redear, black crappie and stocked trout make it one of western Maryland's most productive small reservoirs.
What Makes Lake Habeeb Different
The lake has unusually extensive submerged vegetation. Maryland surveys have documented hydrilla and Eurasian milfoil along with native wild celery and largeleaf pondweed, a plant considered rare in Maryland. Vegetation can extend out to roughly 15 to 20 feet, creating a huge amount of fish habitat for a lake this size.
Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass
Largemouth are more abundant than smallmouth, and DNR tournament catch rates have ranked among the highest from Maryland nontidal waters. Spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, vibrating jigs and soft plastics fit the grass, while smallmouth respond better around rock and deeper points.
Perch, Crappie and Sunfish
Yellow perch are abundant. Small jigs and minnows work for perch and crappie around grass edges and deeper structure. Bluegill and redear provide strong panfishing with worms and crickets.
Trout
Rainbow and brown trout are stocked, giving the lake a seasonal coldwater fishery. Spoons, spinners and bait work best soon after stockings or when cool water keeps fish active.
A Practical Lake Habeeb Game Plan
I would start with the outside vegetation edge, especially where it meets rock or a point. That single transition can hold bass, perch and panfish. When summer vegetation gets thick, work the edge instead of fighting the middle of the grass.
