Range and Identity
Catostomus utawana is retained as the inventory identity. Its recorded range lies in the Adirondack Mountains of New York within St. Lawrence and Hudson drainage areas. Older reports of disappearance from type localities should not be treated as a current survey of every population.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults inhabit upland lakes and streams. Spawning arrivals in temporary streams are episodic and associated with precipitation and suitable flow. The account places reproduction from early summer into later summer, rather than making temperature alone the controlling cue.
Food and Life History
The larger reported measurement is eleven centimeters standard length for females, compared with ten for males or unsexed fish. Breeding males develop gold markings and numerous small breeding tubercles; females remain comparatively drab. Fish are described as spawning once during a reproductive season.
Field Note
Keep rainfall, stream flow and observation date with a spawning record. The presence of a usable temporary channel can be more informative than a calendar date alone.
