Range and Identity
Ophiocara porocephala is the identity retained for this Indian Ocean regional account. A precise locality remains important when comparing sleepers with similar common names. A broad gudgeon label does not establish that a fish from another ocean region belongs to this species.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults occur in brackish estuaries, river mouths and freshwater creeks. They often use vegetation or shelter beneath stones, roots and leaf litter in lower river reaches and ponds. Sand, mud and gravel are all recorded bottom materials.
Food and Life History
The reported upper length is thirty-four centimeters total length. Crustaceans, mollusks and fishes are documented foods. A one-gram database value is not credible as the maximum weight of a fish with this body size and is excluded rather than repeated.
