Range and Identity
Etheostoma podostemone occurs in upper Roanoke waters of Virginia and North Carolina. The Riverweed name should not be treated as proof that every observation was made among one particular plant. A named tributary provides more secure geographic context than the common name alone.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults inhabit rocky riffles in creeks and small rivers. These flowing patches can be separated by deeper pools or slower margins within the same stream. The immediate bottom and current describe the occupied habitat more accurately than a general statement that the fish inhabits rivers.
Food and Life History
The upper reference is 7.6 centimeters total length, with 5.3 centimeters given as a common size. The checked account does not establish a detailed diet, independent maximum weight or complete spawning calendar. Plant association should not be converted into an assumed plant diet.
Field Note
Keep the upper-basin locality with a record. A Roanoke river-system label alone can cover a much larger geographic area than this species’ documented distribution.
