Range and Identity
Lythrurus umbratilis occurs across parts of the Great Lakes and Mississippi basins and Gulf drainages west toward the Trinity and San Jacinto systems in Texas. The broad range should remain separate from a claim of presence in every stream within those basins.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults occupy pools from headwaters to medium-sized rivers. Water can be quiet or flowing, and turbidity is common in descriptions. Small, warm streams with low gradients provide another recurring setting, emphasizing channel character rather than a universal preference for swift riffles.
Food and Life History
The upper reference is 8.8 centimeters total length, with 5.4 centimeters given as a common size. The species lays eggs over open substrate. Its migratory behavior remains undetermined in the account, so seasonal movement is not asserted solely from the variety of occupied habitats.
Field Note
Include current and clarity in a collection note. Two pools in the same drainage can differ substantially, and those immediate conditions help describe the fish’s occupied habitat.
