Range and Identity
Pristipomoides zonatus occurs from East Africa across the Indo-Pacific toward Hawaii and Tahiti, with records northward to Japan and southward toward Australia and Lord Howe Island. Similar deep-water snappers require careful identification. Locality and complete fin and body markings help keep records species-specific.
Habitat and Behavior
Rocky areas on the continental or island shelf and slope provide habitat. Capture depth is therefore useful information alongside the fish itself. A specimen brought to a dock should not be described as a shallow-water fish simply because the photograph was taken near shore.
Food and Life History
Recorded foods include fishes, shrimps, crabs, cephalopods and other marine animals. The maximum length reference is 57.5 centimeters fork length, while the independent mass reference is 1.8 kilograms. A common total-length value in the source uses a different endpoint and is not directly interchangeable.
Field Note
Retain the fork-length label with the measurement. Comparing it numerically with a total-length reference can otherwise produce a misleading size difference.
