Range and Identity
Pristipomoides filamentosus ranges from East Africa toward Hawaii and Tahiti, with northern Japanese and southern Australian records. Similar red-colored snappers should remain separate by scientific identity. A common market name alone cannot establish which deepwater species supplied a measurement.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults occur over rocky bottoms. Guam catches are especially documented between 180 and 270 meters, but that regional catch range is not an absolute global depth limit. Nighttime upward movement adds a vertical component to the fish’s use of its deep habitat.
Food and Life History
Foods include small fishes, shrimp, crabs, amphipods, ascidians and salps. Upper references are one hundred centimeters total length and 8.2 kilograms. A common length in the source uses standard length and should not be compared as though it included the entire tail.
