Coastal Drainage Range
Records extend from the St. Marys system toward the Florida Panhandle’s New River and south to the Alafia system. These are distinct watersheds. A regional Florida label should not be expanded to every coastal stream without a supporting locality record.
Pools and Runs
Adults use headwaters, creeks and small rivers, often beside vegetation over sand or silt. Pools and runs have different current conditions. Record both the cover and actual flow when describing a fish rather than treating all plant-associated habitat as standing water.
Length and Identification
The maximum reference is 6.5 centimeters total length. The scientific name is Pteronotropis metallicus. Reflective appearance alone is not sufficient to distinguish it from other shiners; preserve the head, body pattern, fin outlines and precise drainage for comparison.
Do Not Rely Only on Shine
Lighting changes the appearance of reflective scales. Locality and structural details are more reliable than a metallic color impression by itself.
