Range and Identity
Pteronotropis hypselopterus occurs below the Fall Line from the St. Andrews Bay region toward Mobile Bay. The compiled range excludes the Choctawhatchee system upstream from the mouth of the Pea River. That exception is useful because a broad basin name alone can otherwise imply more extensive occupancy.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults use pools and runs in headwaters, creeks and small rivers. Sand and clay are both recorded bottom materials, often together with vegetation or debris. These lowland settings should not be replaced with a generic description of swift mountain riffles simply because the fish is a shiner.
Food and Life History
Seven centimeters total length is the reported upper size. The available account does not establish an independent maximum weight or a detailed migration pattern. Those gaps do not change the documented association with sheltered, structured stream habitat.
Field Note
Keep the position within the drainage with a record, especially in the Choctawhatchee system. Upstream and downstream locations are not interchangeable for this species.
