The Lowland Shiner

Lowland Shiner is a small coastal-plain stream fish. Sand and silt pools or runs, often near vegetation, provide characteristic habitat below the Fall Line.

Below the Fall Line

The distribution extends from the Little Lynches system in the Pee Dee basin toward the Satilla drainage. Its below-Fall-Line setting is an important part of the range description. Upland records should not be added merely because a nearby basin contains the species.

Plants and Soft Bottoms

Adults use pools and runs of creeks and small rivers over sand or silt, often near vegetation. These features describe both shelter and substrate. A vegetation record does not mean the water is completely still, particularly when the fish occupies a flowing run.

Size and Comparison

The maximum reference is 6.6 centimeters total length. The inventory names Pteronotropis stonei. A full side image retaining the head, body pattern and fins supports comparisons with other small shiners, especially when accompanied by the precise tributary and its coastal-plain position.

Record the Fall-Line Context

The coastal-plain position helps interpret Lowland Shiner records. Keep it with the river name rather than assuming a basin-wide distribution.
