Range and Habitat
The species occurs across Gulf Coast and lower Mississippi region drainages. Adults use vegetation over mud in slow streams, swamps and oxbows. A quiet backwater is therefore a characteristic setting, not an unusual departure from a riffle-dwelling lifestyle.
Feeding
Midge larvae and minute crustaceans are important foods. Isopods, amphipods and mayfly nymphs contribute seasonally. This diet ties the fish to the small animals living within its vegetated shallow-water habitat.
Size and Reproduction
The maximum length is under five centimeters including the tail, with a common reference around 3.4 centimeters. Eggs attach to substrate and remain unguarded. Small body size and dense cover make careful, close observation more useful than judging presence from a quick look across the water.
