Taxonomic Revision
The original species description appeared in 1994. A 2008 study recognized three additional species from populations formerly included in the Duskytail complex. Their localities and reproductive observations should not automatically be copied into the narrower modern Duskytail account.
Copper Creek Identity
The original specimen came from Copper Creek below the mouth of Obeys Creek in Virginia. That locality provides a useful anchor when reviewing old Tennessee and Cumberland drainage records. The broad historical range is not a list of current localities for Etheostoma percnurum alone.
Size and Research
The compiled 4.2-centimeter standard-length measurement comes from a specimen dataset. It is a documented size, not an independently established biological upper limit. Retaining the collection identity is particularly important in a complex that has been divided into multiple species.
