Upper Spring Lake

Upper Spring Lake is a Wisconsin reservoir located in Jefferson County and the best current size-and-depth record is about 17 acres and a maximum depth of 11 feet, so you know roughly what you are getting into before loading the boat or walking the bank.

The first things worth knowing

I would start broad, then slow down once something starts making sense by giving the best bank cover, any obvious weeds, and the deepest water I can reach more than a couple of throwaway casts and once one type of water shows life, I would look for more of the same.

What the current record shows

The species currently tied to Upper Spring Lake include Black Crappie, Bluegill, Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike, Pumpkinseed, and Yellow Perch; so the first trip would at least account for weeds, wood, rock, or docks for bass and weeds and easy cover for panfish, and avoid chasing a totally different kind of fishing without a reason.

How I would fish it

For somebody fishing Upper Spring Lake for the first time, I would rather learn one shoreline, bay, point, or break than spend the whole day running around, and I would pull up the current Wisconsin fishing regulations before leaving home.
