Roach Lake

Down in Vilas County, Roach Lake is a lake with the current inventory showing about 48 acres and a maximum depth of 48 feet, so the size of the job is pretty easy to understand before you go.

Know the water first

The smart first move here is to keep the day manageable with a simple look at shoreline cover, weed edges, and the first clean drop away from the bank before I spent the rest of the day chasing somebody else's old fishing report.

Species already connected to this water

Fish recorded for Roach Lake include Black Crappie, Bluegill, Largemouth Bass, Pumpkinseed, and Yellow Perch; which gives me something real to work with around weeds, wood, rock, or docks for bass and weeds and easy cover for panfish, and keep the first trip from getting too complicated.

The first trip does not need to be fancy

If I only had one day to learn Roach Lake, I would start with obvious fish-holding water and let actual bites tell me whether to stay or move, then I would confirm the current Wisconsin rules for the species I plan to target.
