I would keep the first trip pretty simple and I would make the opening plan about the best bank cover, any obvious weeds, and the deepest water I can reach before I started running around looking for something better.
Recorded fish species
On the species side, McDonald Lake currently has Black Crappie, Bluegill, Largemouth Bass, Pumpkinseed, and Yellow Perch on record; which is enough for me to plan around weeds, wood, rock, or docks for bass and weeds and easy cover for panfish, and keep the rest of the day loose.
My basic approach
If we were fishing McDonald Lake together, I would fish a few sensible areas, remember where the life is, and stop forcing a pattern that is not there, and I would still look at the current Wisconsin regulations before fishing.
