Lake Wateree is a 13,025-acre Catawba River reservoir in Fairfield, Kershaw and Lancaster counties. An SCDNR hydroacoustic study measured about 59 feet near the dam. Largemouth bass, striped bass, black crappie and catfish are the major sport-fish targets.
What Makes Wateree Different
Wateree is an old hydroelectric reservoir with a defined river channel, broad creek mouths, points and changing current. SCDNR regularly stocks striped bass and maintains fish attractors. A recent habitat project placed thousands of tons of concrete at depths from 30 to 70 feet to improve crappie and catfish habitat.
Bass and Stripers
Bass can be caught shallow around grass and points early, then deeper on drops and channel structure with soft plastics. Stripers often use creek mouths and lower-lake open water, where downlines, freelines and live bait are useful.
Crappie and Catfish
Crappie respond to jigs and minnows around attractors, brush and deeper structure. Catfish can be caught with fresh cut bait around humps, points and channels.
A Practical Wateree Game Plan
I would start with the main river channel and adjacent creek mouths in mind. If fish are shallow, work points and grass. If the bite fades, move to the 30- to 70-foot attractor and channel zones rather than simply running shoreline.
