Piney Run Reservoir is a 300-acre Carroll County lake with a maximum depth of about 50 feet. Maryland DNR calls the fishery one of the best in the state for its size. Quality largemouth bass, redear, bluegill, yellow perch, channel catfish and black crappie share the lake with stocked tiger muskie, landlocked striped bass and seasonal rainbow trout.
What Makes Piney Run Different
The lake combines clear water, artificial fish structures, deep water and heavy summer vegetation. Gasoline motors are prohibited, which keeps boat movement slower. Tiger muskies were first stocked in 1996 to help control abundant panfish and provide a large predator fishery.
Largemouth Bass
Clear water and vegetation make long casts, topwaters, spinnerbaits and soft plastics effective. During summer, work outside weed edges and artificial structure rather than burying every cast in the thickest grass.
Tiger Muskie and Stripers
Tiger muskies require larger jerkbaits, swimbaits and stout tackle. Striped bass may reproduce in limited numbers and can be caught on live bait, spoons and swimbaits in open water.
Crappie, Perch and Trout
Crappie and yellow perch respond to small jigs and minnows. Rainbow trout are stocked seasonally, adding a coldwater option that can be caught with spoons, spinners and bait.
A Practical Piney Run Game Plan
Because gasoline motors are prohibited, I would pick a section and fish it completely. Start with vegetation and structure for bass, then shift to open-water depth for stripers or deeper panfish.
