Lake Okeechobee

Lake Okeechobee is Florida's largest lake and one of the most famous largemouth bass and black crappie fisheries in the country. The inventory lists 467,200 acres and a maximum depth of about 12 feet, which fits the basic character of the lake: enormous in surface area but shallow almost everywhere. Bass, black crappie, bluegill, redear sunfish, catfish, gar, bowfin and several nonnative species are part of the fishery.

What Makes Lake Okeechobee Different

Okeechobee is not a deep-water reservoir. Its identity is the broad marsh edge, cattails, bulrush, Kissimmee grass, submerged vegetation, canals and navigation channels. FWC's current management work emphasizes the importance of native marsh and submerged plants because storms, high water and invasive floating vegetation can change fish habitat on a lake-wide scale.

Largemouth Bass

For bass, I would spend most of my time around outside grass lines, holes in emergent vegetation, canal mouths and places where cleaner water meets thicker cover. Spinnerbaits, vibrating jigs, frogs, swim jigs and Texas-rigged plastics all fit this lake. Wild shiners remain one of the best trophy-bass baits. Current statewide rules allow five largemouth bass per day, but only one may be 16 inches or longer.

Black Crappie and Bream

Black crappie under 10 inches must be released and the daily limit is 25. During cooler months, drifting or trolling minnows and small jigs through open water is a standard approach. Bluegill and redear can be caught around reeds, grass and canals with crickets, worms and small jigs.

A Practical Okeechobee Game Plan

Pick one section of the lake before launching because Okeechobee is too large to fish randomly. I would start on the marsh edge, look for clean water and healthy vegetation, and keep the nearest canal or boat trail in mind. Lake level matters here as much as lure choice, so shallow-water hazards and changing access should be checked before every trip.
