Range and Identity
Cyprinella galactura has separate eastern and western drainage records, including Cumberland, Tennessee, upper Atlantic and New systems, and St. Francis and White waters. This disjunct pattern should not be smoothed into a claim of continuous distribution across every intervening basin.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults chiefly inhabit rocky runs, with pools and riffles used less often, in clear headwaters, creeks and small rivers. The current position remains useful with an observation. A broad river name alone can obscure which of these smaller habitat settings was occupied.
Food and Life History
The upper reference is fifteen centimeters total length, with 6.9 centimeters as common. Terrestrial insects and drifting aquatic larvae are reported foods. An independent maximum mass and definite migration pattern were not established in the short account checked.
Field Note
Keep the exact drainage and feeding position with a record. Insects can arrive from land or drift through the channel, so a stream-insect diet does not imply exclusively bottom feeding.
