Range and Identity
Oreochromis urolepis is recorded from the Rufiji, Ruvu, Mbwenkuru and Wami systems of Tanzania. Island records require their own native or introduced context. This account should not be extended to every cultured tilapia merely because the common names are similar.
Habitat and Behavior
The species tolerates a range of salinities in the checked compilation. Such tolerance is not proof that every population makes the same movement between river and coast. Location and the actual water conditions remain important when interpreting a record.
Food and Life History
The upper length reference is forty-four centimeters standard length, which excludes the tail. Females mouthbrood. Reports involving aquaculture crosses should retain the specific parent pairing and conditions; they do not establish that all offspring of every possible cross will share one sex or growth pattern.
