African Distribution
Native records include major central and southern African river systems, with introductions elsewhere. An introduced population should not be added silently to the original range. The species has low salinity tolerance compared with some other tilapias and should not inherit their marine-habitat claims.
Food and Cover
Adults feed mainly on detritus, algae and diatoms. Young also take small invertebrates and zooplankton, a tendency that decreases with age. Quiet water and vegetation provide characteristic habitat, although the species is recorded in other settings as well.
Nests and Size
Males build and defend mound-like spawning territories, while females carry developing eggs and shelter with their broods. Young initially stay near cover. The compiled maximum is 43 centimeters total length, a reference upper size rather than a prediction for every introduced population.
Keep Brooding and Nesting Roles Separate
The male’s spawning territory and the female’s mouthbrooding are different parts of reproduction. Preserve both roles in the account.
