Range and Identity
Phenacobius mirabilis occurs in the Mississippi basin and western Lake Erie drainage, with isolated records in selected Gulf systems. The Sabine, Trinity, Colorado and Pecos are among the named southwestern areas. These separated occurrences should not become a claim of continuous occupancy between all river basins.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults use gravel and rubble riffles and runs in clear to turbid water. Creeks and small to medium rivers are typical, with some larger-river occurrence. The range of channel sizes does not eliminate the importance of the actual coarse-bottom collection position.
Food and Life History
The compiled maximum is twelve centimeters total length, with 4.6 centimeters as a common reference. Insect larvae are the stated food. An independent maximum body mass and detailed spawning sequence are not established in the checked summary.
Field Note
Include the drainage and substrate with a record. A downward mouth and a familiar minnow shape are not substitutes for diagnostic identification among small bottom-associated stream fishes.
