Range and Identity
Phenacobius uranops occurs in the upper Green, middle Cumberland and Tennessee river drainages. Its recorded range includes parts of Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama. Drainage boundaries describe its distribution more accurately than treating each of those states as uniformly occupied.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults live in fast creeks and small to medium rivers, using both runs and riffles. Gravel and rubble are characteristic substrates. The species should not be assigned to an adjacent quiet muddy pond merely because that pond shares a watershed.
Food and Life History
The compiled upper size is twelve centimeters total length, compared with an eight-centimeter common reference. Recorded foods include dipteran and caddisfly larvae. An independent maximum mass is not established in the checked species account.
