Range and Identity
Eleotris pisonis is recorded in the western Atlantic from northern coastal and island localities toward southeastern Brazil. Broad regional records should retain the actual coast and identification, particularly where similar sleepers occur together.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults inhabit shallow muddy or sandy bottom and appear to favor freshwater tributaries near estuaries. A range of salinities is reported, but this does not define one preferred value for every population. The freshwater-to-estuary position is useful habitat information.
Food and Life History
The upper reference is twenty-five centimeters total length, with 12.5 centimeters as a common size. Foods include fly larvae and pupae, especially in young fish, plus crabs, shrimp and small fishes. Diet can vary with maturity and season.
