Range and Identity
Aphareus rutilans ranges widely through Indo-Pacific waters, with a southeastern Atlantic record off South Africa. These geographic details should remain attached to the species rather than extend every jobfish common name around the world. Similar reef predators require a complete identification.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults use reefs and rocky bottom areas, including depths of at least one hundred meters in the account. They occur in the water column as well as close to the bottom. This makes a purely seabed-bound description too narrow for their recorded habitat.
Food and Life History
Upper references are 110 centimeters total length and 11.3 kilograms. Recorded prey includes fishes, squid and crustaceans. A common-size value uses standard length, so it should not be directly compared with total length as if the tail were measured the same way.

Retain the measurement convention and fishing depth with a record. Both improve comparisons among large jobfishes that can be encountered in overlapping offshore habitats.
