Range and Identity
Etelis carbunculus is recognized across Indo-Pacific waters in the modern catalog. Older accounts have sometimes applied the name to other Etelis, including Longtail Red Snapper. A common red-snapper label is therefore insufficient for assigning a measurement or geographic record.
Habitat and Behavior
Adults occupy rocky bottoms in deeper marine waters. The relevant habitat can include water above the bottom as well as the seabed itself. A catch should retain depth and locality when available rather than be summarized only as a fish from offshore.
Food and Life History
Foods include fishes, squid, shrimp, crabs and planktonic organisms such as pelagic tunicates. A very large upper length from a historically confused account is not assigned here without secure species attribution. No maximum mass is calculated from that uncertain measurement.
Field Note
Keep the species determination with a large catch record. Similar deepwater Etelis can otherwise make a plausible-looking size figure apply to the wrong fish.
